Magnetic or digital ballasts are very important for any indoor grow room set up because High Intensity Discharge (HID) grow lamps like HPS and MH can’t run without them. A ballast limits and regulates the power for safe, stable operation. Ballasts have to match the wattage rating of the grow lamp. Eg a 400w lamp has to be powered by a ballast with a 400w rating. A 400w, 600w or 1000w grow lamp must be run from a an equivalent wattage rating ballasts for lights.
